Carpet fibers absorb smells naturally, particularly pet odors. Vacuuming on a regular basis can minimize some of these effects, but there are actually many ways that you can prevent pet odors from being absorbed by your carpet. These tips will help you maintain your carpeting and keep it smelling fresh and clean.

Rake Your Carpet on a Regular Basis

Carpet rakes look like long-handled brushes and are made to revitalize carpeting. Some carpet rakes are only meant to freshen long-pile carpets, but others are made specifically to rake pet hair out of carpeting, and can be more effective than vacuuming. Removing pet hair can help keep pet odors from sinking into your carpet fibers.

Open Your Windows

It may seem like a simple thing, but airing out the rooms of your house on a regular basis will minimize the odors absorbed by your carpeting. Make an effort to open windows and run fans in the windows, or turn on ceiling fans.

Deodorize

Deodorizing is an easy and effective way to remove odors from your carpeting if it's begun to smell slightly less than fresh. To deodorize your carpet, start by sprinkling the carpet with baking soda. Spread the baking soda evenly around the room using a brush or the flat side of the carpet rake, then leave the baking soda to sit on the carpet over night. In the morning, vacuum the baking soda from the carpet. If necessary, repeat the process.

Limit the Areas Where Your Pets Can Travel

If possible, consider keeping your pets in a section of the house that has little or no carpeting. Limiting your pet's ability to tread on the carpet will help prevent the odors from being absorbed at all.

Treat Pet Urine With Vinegar

Pet urine has a very strong odor. Treat accidents as soon as they occur using warm water and a mild detergent mixed together. After using this solution to clean up the urine stain, soak the urine-spot with a combination of water and vinegar. Allow the area to dry fully before smelling the spot and using the water and vinegar solution again, if necessary.
